Tourist Octopus Card
Widely used in Hong Kong for public transport, merchandise purchases, fast food chains, and vending machines, etc. The cost of service or product is deducted automatically from the stored value on the user’s Octopus card thus saving time and eliminates the need for small change.
Choice of Octopus Card
There are many types available, however for a tourist, you probably be looking at The Airport Express Travel Pass and Standard On-Loan Octopus (Child, Adult, Elder).
Airport Express Travel Pass
Airport Express One Free Single Journey + 3 days unlimited travel on MTR + $50 deposit + Stored value $20 = Price HK$220
Airport Express Two Free Single Journeys + 3 days unlimited travel on MTR + $50 deposit + Stored value $20 = Price HK$300
(valid for 180 days)
Standard On-Loan Octopus (Child, Adult, Elder)
Adult: Deposit $50 + Stored Value $100 = Price HK$150
Child: Deposit $50 + Stored Value $20 = Price HK$70
Senior: Deposit $50 + Stored Value $20 = Price HK$70
TIP: The tourist versions which are generally bad deals unless you use the MTR / airport express a lot.

Cash Payment Only. Credit cards are not accepted for purchase of Octopus Cards or other MTR tickets
Tip: However, credit card payment is accepted for purchase of Airport Express tickets!
Commuting on MTR? Check out the faresaver which gives you HK$1 or HK$2 discount on your next ride within a day. Imagine taking 5 MTR ride a day and have HK$2 discount per ride, you save HK$10. Just locate the faresaver machine, tap your card and you be informed your faresaver discount is on for your next ride. However, the faresaver machines are usually out of the way!
If the balance on the card is positive (HK$1 or above) but insufficient to cover the cost of the next transaction the card can incur a negative value of up to HK$35 which is recovered the next time the card is top upped. The card cannot be used for any further transaction once a negative balance has accumulated until the card has been top upped.
If you have not top up your Octopus for over 1,000 days, it will be deactivated. You can go to any Customer Service Centre at MTR stations to have it reactivated free of charge.
Top up the Octopus at any public transportation company’s Customer Service Centres, MTR stations’ Octopus Add-Value machines or convenience stores such as 7-11 and Circle K.
Return & Refund
Tourists leaving Hong Kong by air can return their Octopus to receive a refund at the Airport Express Customer Service Counters in the Arrival Hall at Terminal 1 and on the Airport Express Arrival Platform at Terminal 2 of Hong Kong International Airport. There is a handling fee of HK$9 if you return it within 3 months of issue.
